Family Support

St Andrew’s Hospice offers a range of services for patients, their families and carers, aimed at providing emotional, psychological, spiritual, and pastoral care and support.

We have a specialist team of Palliative Care Social Workers that will assess your social, practical, and emotional needs, and will ensure you and those around you have access to the appropriate resources through illness and beyond.

Our Social Workers can support with many practical challenges, from organising personal care at home, getting help for carers and finding suitable residential and nursing home placements, to assisting with housing problems and dealing with financial or legal issues. They are also equipped to provide emotional support, which can include advising families on how to communicate more effectively. In some cases, one of our social workers may be able to advocate on your behalf. Social work support is provided for both adults and children.

St Andrew’s Hospice recognises the vital role carers play in ensuring the health and wellbeing of those they care for. We strongly believe that offering carers information and support is a key part of what we do.

More information can be found in the carers section of our website.

We have a compassionate Spiritual Care Lead and team of volunteers who are here to care for the spiritual, pastoral or religious needs of you and your family. They will be there for you throughout illness and in bereavement, and they can provide tailored support regardless of whether you are a person of faith. The team are there to talk through issues related to the impact of your illness on both your life and the lives of the people around you.

A team of Macmillan Social Welfare Officers are based at St Andrew’s Hospice. They offer a comprehensive benefit support service for adult palliative care patients both in the hospice and community, including for individuals and their carers living with and beyond cancer. In addition to the general support they provide, they can share information on grants available and advise people on a range of issues, including funeral poverty.

Our patient and family support services will be offered to you as part of the care you receive from St Andrew’s Hospice. If you would like more information about the resources we offer, please call 01472 350908 , or ask a member of staff who will contact the Patient and Family Support Team on your behalf.
