Isis spent the summer volunteering before starting university

We’re wishing one of our youngest retail volunteers the best of luck as she heads off to university this week! Isis Smith has been volunteering at our Bradley Crossroads store over the summer, before she begins an Art degree at Sheffield Hallam University.

She said she decided to volunteer with us to gain some experience of a workplace environment and learn a range of new skills before starting university.

“I’ve really enjoyed learning to use the till and meeting such a range of different people. I was quite nervous to begin with but it was really good; the staff and other volunteers are really helpful and teach you everything you need to know. I’ve learned how to communicate with people better and work as part of a team, alongside the skills you need to work in retail. If you’re thinking about volunteering then just give it a go, I’m sure you’ll like it!”

Shop manager Joanna Green said Isis will be “very missed”, adding: “She’s always so positive and gets along with everyone here; she’s happy to help with anything needed. Having her here has definitely brought some younger customers in, plus it’s great for us to show young people that volunteering isn’t just something you do when you retire. You could do it alongside part-time work or before you go to university like Isis, to gain extra experience.”
We’re sorry to see Isis go but wish her all the luck, and look forward to welcoming her back to volunteer with us in the holidays!
