We are proud to be one of more than 140 hospices taking part in the “This is Hospice Care” campaign, a national initiative facilitated by Hospice UK. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the vital role hospices play in communities and to shift public perceptions of hospice care.
The two-week campaign, which launched on 17th February 2025, will capture hearts and minds through a powerful TV advert based on real life hospice stories. The goal is to encourage people to consider leaving a gift in their will to support their local hospice, ensuring that these essential services can continue to provide their compassionate and specialist care for future generations.
We are encouraging our community to consider the profound impact that a gift in their will can have. The increase in demand for care will place unprecedented pressure on hospices, which already rely on support and funding from supporters to continue to provide much-needed services.
Chief Executive Michelle Rollinson explained why St Andrew's Hospice is so important to her.
"I joined the hospice in 2001, as a Registered Nurse in the Children’s Unit. My parents were amongst the first volunteers at St Andrew’s Hospice, in 1979, and I share their passion for ensuring that adults, children, young people, and families have fair and equal access to high-quality palliative and end-of-life care.
"We know that as many as 90% of people who die in the UK would benefit from palliative care. And whilst hospices across the UK provided palliative and end-of-life care to 300,000 people in 2022-23, one in four people are still dying without the care and support they need.
"This is caused by a lack of funding. There has been a lot in the media recently about the issues affecting the hospice sector, and the need for a sustainable funding strategy to protect the future of palliative and end of life care.
"Hospices around the country are announcing cuts to services and staff, and some even predicting closure if more is not done to protect our future.
"Whilst that is not yet our reality, it is only due to the generosity of you, our supporters. St Andrew’s Hospice costs more than £6million to run, of which less than a fifth is funded by the NHS. The rest, we must raise ourselves – with your help.
"And whilst we very much welcome the Government’s recent announcement of a £100million capital package of support for UK hospices, there is still a huge shortfall to be met.
"That is why we have joined a national campaign led by Hospice UK, to ask you to consider leaving us a gift in your Will. Legacy giving funds a quarter of our services, so even the smallest gift makes a huge difference.
"You may know St Andrew’s Hospice as a place that looks after adults in the final stages of their lives. We offer the comfort, care and compassion that we believe each one of us deserves, easing pain and managing symptoms whilst providing a holistic hand hold to both our patients and their families.
"But did you know that the breadth of our care reaches far beyond the confines of our adult inpatient unit?
"Each year, we also provide thousands of appointments supporting Hospice at Home visits for children and young people across Lincolnshire, Hull and East Yorkshire, wellbeing sessions in our garden and creativity room, physiotherapy and lymphoedema treatments, bereavement counselling and complementary therapies.
"Our hospice is a vibrant, happy place, which celebrates life and living. Whether through a movie marathon at our onsite cinema, art therapy groups in our Coffee Retreat or ukulele groups entertaining patients in our Hub, our focus is on making each day count.
"And we do this at no cost to our patients.
"That is why legacy giving is so vitally important to help secure our future. By leaving us a gift in your Will, you are ensuring that hospice care can live on for all, for now, forever.
"I am simply the custodian of this wonderful organisation, here to ensure that it is in a position to continue to serve the community for many years to come.
"We believe that everybody deserves the right to access the level of care and support that we provide. If you agree, please consider remembering St Andrew’s Hospice in your Will.
"Together, we can make each day count for the adults, children, young people and families who use our services – for now and forever.
"Thank you."
