Gifts in Wills

Thank you for considering leaving St Andrew’s Hospice a gift in your Will.

We care for and support people affected by life-limiting conditions, or who are coming to the end of their life. The quality of care that we provide is vital, but so too are the memories we make along the way. Those moments that count are at the heart of everything we do.

It all started with a £500 gift

The modern hospice movement was founded by Dame Cicely Saunders in 1967, thanks to a single gift of £500. Dame Cicely had a vision of transforming care for dying and was left this gift by David Tasma, a patient with whom she had shared her dream.

By leaving St Andrew’s a gift in your Will, together we can make each day count for the adults, children and families who use our service – for now and forever.

St Andrew’s Hospice costs more than £6million each year to run, of which only a fifth is funded by the NHS. The rest is raised thanks to the generosity of our community; whether through donations to our charity shops, fundraising and events or legacy giving.

  • 3,000 – The number of nights our adult in-patient beds are used per year
  • 694 – Hospice at Home sessions provided for children and families each year
  • £18,000 – the cost of operating all St Andrew’s Hospice activities per day
Legacy giving funds a quarter of our services

People often worry about writing a Will, but it doesn’t have to be an expensive or difficult process. Here are the answers to some questions that you may have.

There is no need to tell us. However, if you choose to let us know, it will give us the opportunity to thank you for your generosity, invite you to special events and let you know how your gift will help.

Yes, leaving a charitable gift in your Will can reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax liable on your estate. Your legal adviser or financial planner can help with this.

Yes, you can. This is a wonderful way of remembering a loved one, and your gift will be permanently recorded in their memory.

Both are amazing options. Some people give regularly to St Andrew’s during their lifetime. For others, it is easier to plan financially to leave a gift in their Will. Either way, you will be helping to ensure our care continues in the future, for all who need it.

We understand circumstances can change. It is important to check your Will regularly and make sure it reflects your current situation and wishes.

Not at all. The hospice movement was founded with a legacy gift of £500 from a patient. We promise to make sure every penny of your gift is put to the best possible use for our patients and their families. However small or large, it can be a satisfying feeling to know that your legacy will support the continuation of our work.

Supporter Anne has chosen to leave St Andrew’s Hospice a gift in her will in memory of her husband Tony, who received end-of-life care on the adult inpatient unit.

“He thought he was in a hotel when he first arrived, it was just fantastic,” she said. “The rooms are beautiful and the care we received was so wonderful. I really can’t praise it enough.

“You don’t have to worry. Whatever time it is, whenever you ring the bell, someone will come. Somebody is always there. It’s just reassurance and knowing that’s what they’re there for, nobody will mind.”

Anne has also since accessed bereavement support at St Andrew’s Hospice, which she said has helped her to “talk openly” about how she feels.

“I know when I pass on the money will go towards doing good. The kindness the hospice showed to both of us was above and beyond. I know it doesn’t receive the funding it needs, so I want to help somebody else like I’ve been helped.”
